Soon after, the outgoing CM told media persons: ‘I am fortunate to serve this state for nearly two years. I am quitting on the directions of party high command. I will continue to work for the welfare of this state and welfare of Congress party.’His resignation paved the way for a long list of contenders waiting to be the next CM.

His tenure of 22 months as CM was full of thorns, as he faced criticism for being an outsider right from day one. His party rivals left no stone unturned to point fingers at him at the slightest fault. Unfortunately, he faced criticism more from his own party members than from the opposition.

Certain section of MLAs criticised Bahuguna leadership for negligence of development work in their constituencies. However, a poor initial response to the natural catastrophe which hit the state last year was enough for his rivals to cry for his dismissal. Unlike former Congress CM Narayan Dutt Tiwari, he was not politically mature to counter the adversity.

The former also faced volley of criticism during his tenure of five years but his past experience of serving Uttar Pradesh thrice as CM came in handy. Senior Congress leader and union minister Ghulam Nabi Azad along with AICC general secretaries Janardan Dwivedi and Ambika Soni will visit Dehradun on Saturday to have a crucial meeting with ruling party MLAs.

The seven MLAs of Progressive Democratic Front (PDF) will also participate in the meeting to select the next CM. Congress has 33 members in the 70-member house.
