Venus Williams beats Wozniacki in Dubai semis

Williams, who lost the Auckland final to Ana Ivanovic last month, lost an early 2-0 lead in the first set, but from 2-2 always led in the 81-minute match.

The 44th-ranked Williams, the Dubai champion in 2009 and 2010, failed to serve out the first set at 5-2, surrendering that eighth game at love. Williams broke back immediately, converting a second set point.

She broke the Dane’s serve at 15-40 with a textbook backhand volley for 2-0 in the second set. Another break in the eighth game improved her record against Wozniacki to 5-0. Top-ranked Serena Williams faced 26th-ranked Alize Cornet of France in the other semifinal. If Serena wins, the Williams sisters will face each other in a first final since 2009.

World number one Serena Williams’ comeback trail endured further feisty moments with Jelena Jankovic, the former world number one from Serbia, On Thursday before she reached the semifinals of the Dubai Open.
