Keeping an eye on the assembly elections slated for December next year, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit met a number of traders’ associations on Wednesday and said that the collection of value added tax (VAT) is crucial for the development of the city.
The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), led Praveen Khandelwal, who is national general secretary called on to discuss VAT related pending issues at CM residence where union minister Kapil Sibal was also present.
Sibal, who represents Chandni Chowk constituency in Lok Sabha, took the traders to Dikshit for discussion on certain issues relating to payment of VAT by them.
Traders’ associations assured Dikshit and Sibal, that they were ready to resolve the issues relating implementation of FDI in retail in Delhi through talks.
‘Not to do anything for evasion of the taxes. The traders have been helpful and sensitive throughout. The VAT being collected from the traders is only used to develop world class infrastructure in Delhi’, said Dikshit.
Khandelwal demanded settlement of the difficulties relating to Form 32 and 33 and mismatching of form 2A and 2B. He also mentioned difficulties in obtaining Form C from other states.
Dikshit, however, announced that the date of submission of Form C 2 has been extended up to 31 December, as requested by the traders.
The traders have been strongly opposing FDI in multibrand retail alleging it will badly hit small retailers.
Keen to take the lead in attracting FDI in multibrand retail, the Delhi government has already announced making amendments to the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) Act to allow direct connectivity between retailers and farmers.
Dikshit, on a request of the traders, agreed to form a committee to examine the grievances of the traders relating to payment of VAT.
The committee will comprise representatives of traders’ association besides senior officials of the government.
