Calling for information technology-guided transparency in the interface between organ donors and recipients, union health minister Harsh Vardhan on Monday said, ‘No VIP quotas and recommendations from officers will be entertained. Every life is worth protecting and the spirit of the movement is not to be mocked.’
Vardhan, who visited National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) centre at Safdarjung hospital, on Monday said, ‘A general waiting list will be maintained. Once a brain-stem dead patient’s consent is available, a state-of-the-art retrieval, matching and transplantation operation will swing into action.’
A patient who registered his name for the waiting list will be given a number which will not change even if he admits himself to another hospital later, the minister added. ‘India faces one of the biggest deficit of organ donors in the world. To meet the demand of organ donation, the government will expand the networking for the procurement and distribution of organs in the country. The main motive is to raise awareness among the people of the country for organ donation,’ the health minister said.
He said that a call centre is being set up which will establish contact between donors and people on the waiting list in real time.
