Vajpayee turns 89: BJP reiterates demand for Bharat Ratna to former Prime Minister
‘We celebrated his birthday as National Development Day. On this occasion they have written a letter to the president Pranab Mukherjii to honour him with the greatest civilian award,’ said Satish Upadhayay, media in-charge, Delhi BJP.
‘He is a great son of India and heartthrob of the people. He served for the development of the nation and protection of democratic values,’ he added. The party organised a number of programmes in the city to mark his birthday. Several senior leaders of the party met Vajpayee to wish him on his birthday at his residence, who is ill and has been politically inactive since 2004.
The city BJP started the functions with a programme at Dev Nagar, where sweaters were distributed to more than 2000 children from the poor families. Then in Mayur Vihar, a 89 kg ‘Laddoo’ was distributed amongst people by the local BJP workers. In Chandani Chowk the party organised blood donation camps and as a special gesture 89 pigeons were set free.
In the evening Lok Abhiyan a, a non-governmental organization, which works for the welfare of the people, organised an evening of devotional songs at FICCI auditorium. The event was attended among others by senior BJP leaders LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi, BJP national president Rajnath Singh, leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj and Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel.
