US vice-president Joe Biden heads to Ukraine after violence erupts

Update: 2014-04-21 23:52 GMT
WASHINGTON: US Vice-President Joe Biden is scheduled to arrive in Ukraine today to hold talks with the leaders of the turbulent country.

Biden’s visit comes a day after some violent incidents were reported in eastern Ukraine, despite an agreement reached between Ukraine and Russia last week in order to ease tensions.

Reports claimed that three people died in a shootout at a checkpoint manned by pro-Russia insurgents and both sides blamed each other for the incident.

Biden will land in Kiev today and tomorrow he will meet with the acting prime minister and president of Ukraine.

He will also meet some legislators and democracy activists before returning to Washington on Tuesday night.

It is learned that during his two-day stay in Ukraine, the US leader will hold discussions over the efforts made by the international community, including the US, to strengthen Ukraine’s economy and energy security.

He will also hold talks over next month’s presidential election in the country. agencies
