A 24-year-old US Navy sailor was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of trespassing into a house here in early morning hours, police said, despite a night curfew imposed on all US military members in Japan.
Richard Lawton, a petty officer 2nd class who is stationed in Yokosuka, was drunk at the time of his arrest at the scene around 2:40 am, according to the police. The arrest is the latest in a series of cases involving US military personnel, despite a curfew imposed on all US forces in Japan between 11 pm and 5 am following the alleged rape of a woman in Okinawa by two US sailors in October. ‘I thought that my friend was there,’ the police quoted Lawton, who was scheduled to leave Japan for home on Thursday, as saying.
He had been sleeping at friends' places since Wednesday, the police said, adding the house he trespassed into, located about 5 kilometres northwest of the base in the city south of Tokyo, was unlocked at the time. A 32-year-old woman living in the house, who was waiting for her husband's return in a living room, detected Lawton allegedly trespassing and made an emergency call to police.
