Upset over low marks, college girl attempts immolation in Gurgaon

A girl student of a college allegedly tried to immolate herself on Monday to protest against the college management.

Pinky Chauhan was among over 1,000 students who were protesting against the management of the Government Post-Graduate College for Women near Sector 14 and Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak for giving them low marks ‘intentionally’.

The girl, a resident of Kasan village near Manesar and a BSc second year student, was admitted to a local hospital with 90 percent burn injuries. She was, later, referred to a hospital in Delhi. Hundreds of student from science and commerce faculties were declared failed in the recent examinations.

Earlier, college principal Usha Malik had threatened students that she would spoil their future,’ a protesting student said. Over 1,000 students Saturday blocked the traffic on Mehrauli-Gurgaon road for hours and staged a ‘dharna’ in front of the college main gate to protest against the college management and the university.

BS Sandhu, the controller of examination of the university, also reached the college after the incident and assured students that their answer sheets would be re-checked. Meanwhile, a senior government official informed that college  principal Usha Malik was transferred with immediate effect.
