Delhi Transco Ltd had proposed the setting up of a 220-KV line from Maharani Bagh in the national capital to Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh, but there has been no progress in the project since 2009, owing to the reluctant attitude shown by the Uttar Pradesh government.

Senior Delhi government officials confirmed that Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had personally spoken to her UP counterpart Akhilesh Yadav last year and also written him a letter in this regard.  According to Delhi Transco Ltd official, plans to instal five mega electricity towers has been stuck as the UP government has failed to respond to the proposal. Dikshit  had earlier contacted UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and Samajwadi Party leader Ramgopal Yadav in the issue. Though the UP heavyweights assured action in the case, nothing was done to take it forward. The UP government had allegedly assured that it will allow the Delhi government to install the mega elecrtricity towers. The Delhi government had also paid Rs 2.2 crores as compensation to the UP Irrigation department in this regard, but permission on the same is still awaited.

The estimated cost of the proposed 220 KV line from Maharani Bagh to Ghazipur was Rs 25 crore in 2009. Work on the section that falls in Delhi has been completed. But total completion of the project was delayed owing to the no objection certificate not being provided by the Noida authority for the five locations that falls under its jurisdiction.  At that time, the Delhi government had approached UP CM, but failed to obtain a clear response from him.

A Transco official said that the installation would benefit the residents of  the whole of east Delhi and that Transco would take care of the electricity supply.
