Three hundred and fifty young and upcoming artists will exhibit their works of art along with sixty established artists in the United Art Fair 2012.
The first edition of the United Art Fair will take place between 27-30 September this year at the Pragati Maidan here. After travelling thirteen art hubs in the country, the United Art Fair team led by Annurag Sharma, founder director of the event and Johny ML, Project Director and Chief Curator are throwing open the fair for artists from across the country to exhibit and sell their art directly to buyers without the involvement of galleries.
Approximately 2000 new works of art that include paintings, sculptures, installations, videos, graphic art, photography and large scale outdoor sculptures would be showcased. A ‘Sculpture Park’ will exhibit 15 large scale sculptures.
K S Radhakrishnan’s new monumental sculpture titled ‘Time Tide and Growth’, Subodh Kerkar’s ‘Bread Route’ and Sidharth’s works are the major attractions in the sculptural park.
In the photography section senior artists like Sunil Gupta, Pablo Bartholomew, Deepak John Mathew and so on would present their latest suite of works.
‘This fair would attract around 25000 national and international art players, museum personalities, galleries and curators. Besides, we expect a footfall of Oneal people during the four days,” says Annurag Sharma, the founder director of United Art Fair. The seminars and video lounge also will be major attractions for the art crowd. ‘This is an one point shopping stop for curators, gallerists, art collectors and critics. The future of Indian contemporary art starts from here,” adds Sharma.
Project Director JohnyML says that it has been a great experience of selecting the artists.
‘We travelled all over India and found that the young artists needed patronage. United Art Fair is all about collapsing the monopolies developed in the art scene during the boom years. We are taking artists to the patrons directly. United Art Fair is an interface of creativity and commerce,’ says Johny ML.
Being an artists’ driven art fair, United Art Fair does not include galleries in its proceedings. ‘We want to highlight the artists. However, we are not averse to galleries. They can support their artists through this fair. They can pick up fresh artists to promote. They can also experience experimental works.
‘This fair is going to open several avenues. And as far as the commercial side is concerned this is a major exercise to implement some corrections in the art market.
During the boom years we were mindlessly buying and selling. Our aim was to produce profit. But now to promote art profit cannot be the only driving force. We need to attract more and more art collectors to the scene. We need to tell them that they are the real patrons and it is a process of mutual cultivation,’ says Annurag Sharma.
