UP issues order to eliminate rats in govt offices

The Uttar Pradesh government has issued a Government Order (GO) for getting rid of rats, who have proliferated the Lal Bahadur Shastri Bhawan that house the chief minister's office at the fifth floor of the building.

UP government has directed the maintenance division of the Public Works Department (PWD) to engage an agency to drive away the rodents and make the chief minister's office a rat-free zone.

Other rat infested government buildings have been identified where rats will be killed in the operation carried out.
The other affected buildings include the Vidhan Bhawan, Sachiv Bhawan, Bahukhandi Bhawan, Naveen Bhawan, Adhikari Bhawan and Bapu Bhawan.

‘In the absence of rodent control programme the officers are using 'rat traps' whch are more ofte than not proved useless,’ an official said.

As per a government order (GO) dated A-677/20-7-V-2013-7 (47)/2012 issued on 2 September, 2013, and sent to the executive engineer of PWD (Maintenance Division), the chief management officer would monitor the work of the executing agency every month and submit a report to the secretariat administration department regularly.

Allocating a sum of Rs 30,800 per month (Rs 1.85 lakh for six months) the GO has laid down conditions for the executing agency that will carry out work in an eco-friendly manner.

The agency will have to carry out work in accordance with the provisions of Central Insecticide Act, 1968. It will have to ensure that the rats did not damage any files on the fifth floor of the building.
