Untimely rains add to water logging woes

Update: 2015-03-09 23:30 GMT
With more than 200 identified spots of water logging around the city and the resultant traffic snarls after every thunder spell, the administration needs to pull up its socks before monsoon arrives.

The identified spots include several areas on the BRT corridor between Moolchand and Ambedkar Nagar; on the Mehrauli Badarpur Road; on Mathura Road (especially near Aashram Chowk and Bhogal); on the stretch between IIT Gate and Munirka, near Minto Bridge; Tilak Bridge; Mehrauli and
the Kapaseda Border areas, among others.

“A more collective approach is needed to tackle the menace because there are multiple factors from which, the problem originates and throws traffic out-of-gear,” said a senior official of Delhi Traffic Police.

The senior official added that the first issue related to water logging is the desilting of drains – with regard to which, the Municipal Corporation and the PWD are presently playing a blame game. Then comes drain capacity – with their decade-old designs and geometries, they are of no match for the ever expanding city. The third factor would be road design, especially with regard to the setting of the gradient (slope), which includes the curvature of the road and smooth decline towards the sides apart from slopes of flyovers in general.
