On the eve of May Day, National Alliance for Social Security (NASS), an umbrella organisation representing more than 23 lakhs unorganised workers, has called upon the government to implement the Social Security Act 2008 immediately. This step, they believe needs to be taken to enable workers to avail the benefits of various social security services.
The National Social Security Board for Unorganised Workers, constituted in August 2009 and reconstituted in February 2013 is limited to an advisory role and does not have sufficient powers to implement, monitor and enforce social security. With the exception of a few states such as West Bengal, Chattisgarh and Karnataka, a majority of the states including Delhi have not even setup their state level welfare boards.
Some of the demands of workers are: provision of maternity benefits to all women workers in informal sector, at least Rs 1,500 per month pension to all workers and all workers should be covered under Employess State Insurance Corporation scheme.
