University Grant Comission [UGC] has implemented new guidelines for the uplift of students talented in the field of sports, by providing them with free education, hostel facilities and scholarships.
According to UGC, the objective of the scheme is to provide financial help to medal winners/elite sports persons who are studying in universities /colleges leading to full-time regular courses, including PG diploma and other professional courses.
A senior official, who requested anonymity, said, ‘This has been done to motivate sportspersons to achieve higher levels of performances by assisting them financially.’ The pattern of the assistance will depend upon the level of the performance.
M.Phil students will be given Rs 7,000 per month. Students doing MBA or other professional courses will be given Rs 7,500 per month.
