A 22-year-old medical aspirant from Manipur died of electrocution while she was switching off the water cooler at her friend’s flat in Christian Colony area of North Delhi’s Maurice Nagar in the early hours of Tuesday.
The deceased has been identified as Ringnam who had come to Delhi a few months back to pursue a career in medicine. She was preparing for competitive medical entrance tests and was enrolled in a private coaching centre in the Christian Colony.
Ringnam’s friends told the police that the incident took place at around 5.45 am when Ringnam went to her friend’s place to study where she went to switch on the water cooler. While doing do so, she got electrocuted. “Prima facie, it appears to be a case of accidental death. We are investigating the matter,” said a senior police official.
The official further said that since students live in rented accommodations in the area, at times they purchase sub-standard coolers and furniture.
“We received a call at around 6.18 am from one of her friends. We rushed to the spot and found that the girl had passed away. The deceased’s body was shifted to Bara Hindu Rao hospital. Further investigation is under way,” added the official. Her body has been kept for post-mortem. Meanwhile, her family in Manipur has been informed about the incident.
In the separate incident, a 62-year-old man and a street dog were electrocuted to death in South-west Delhi’s Najafgarh area and their bodies floated for more than four hours in the water logged on the road. After the heavy rainfall on Monday evening, the road was waterlogged and one particular electric pole had an open wire.
As a result, the current flowed to the water. At around 8.30 am, when Trilok was on his way to a local market, he came near the electric pole and was electrocuted. A dog also came in contact to the pole and he too was electrocuted to death. After sometime, the current flowed in to the water logged in the area.
When the police and BSES were informed about the incident they rushed to the spot and electricity was cut for a while. By the time they were rushed to the hospital they died.
A case under the relevant sections has been registered and the investigation is underway. Meanwhile, the locals claimed that they have raised this issue several times but neither BSES nor MCD have taken their plaints seriously.
