Two youths were arrested here on Sunday for passing a racist remark against a student from the northeast, police said. The incident was said to have occurred in the Maurice Nagar area in north Delhi. Two bank executives were arrested in connection with making those remarks on the victim, identified as Hemang Haokip (25), on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.

The incident occurred at approximately 1 am in Christian Colony. The accused, identified as Amit Kumar (22) and Akash Kumar (23), both natives of Bihar and working with a private bank, were arrested by the police after the victim, Haokip, a resident of Manipur, complained against them for making racist comments.

The police said the victim and the accused are neighbors. Haokip was walking near his room along with some friends around 10:30 pm on Saturday when he heard the accused talking about people from the north east, which later flared into racist comments.

‘When Haokip and his friends opposed the accused, they made racist comments against him which led to a heated argument. Some neighbors in the same locality intervened and sorted out the matter’, said a senior police official.

All the persons were said to be inebriated and again indulged into a heated argument after they saw both the accused walking on the street at midnight. Haokip then approached the Maurice Nagar station.

The accused were booked under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST) (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. ‘Haokip is preparing for civil service examinations and has been residing in Maurice Nagar for the last few years’, police officials said.

However, the police said both accused are also aspirants of Staff Selection Commission examination and were working in a private bank.
