The accused have been identified as Sunil Basoya (35) and Sandeep Tyagi (26). Sunil is a resident of Ghaziabad and was running a gang which involves in illegal activities of gambling, extortion, etc in and around Loni and neighboring areas of Delhi.
The incident took place on June 21, when Kailash Gupta was shot dead while his 15-year-old son suffered minor injury on his leg when four unidentified men in a white Swift Dzire car came and started firing indiscriminately near a tea shop from where the duo was passing by at the busy Bhajanpura Chowk in North-east Delhi.
“During investigation, it was learnt that the accused persons were running a gang in NCR and nearby areas. Accordingly, their whereabouts were traced and a trap was laid in Dilshad Garden after receiving a tip-off about their arrival at that spot,” said P S Kushwah, DCP (Special Cell).
The team, in order to intercept the car, signaled the occupants to stop. However, instead of stopping, the occupants of the car attempted to speed away but were forced to stop by tactically deploying their official vehicles.
Being cornered, the occupants took out firearms and opened fire at the police team. The police team also fired in self defence and two occupants of the said car were overpowered and apprehended while having loaded illegal pistols in their hands.
The bullets fired by the criminals landed on the bullet proof jackets worn by the police team. During this melee, one of the occupants managed to escape from the spot taking cover of the darkness while the other two were nabbed.
