Two decomposed bodies were found in south-east Delhi’s Govindpuri area. The Nepalese couple’s included a woman in her late thirties.
According to police, they received a call at 9.45 pm late on Tuesday evening that a body was found in a rented accommodation in Giri Nagar area of Govindpuri.
‘We reached the crime scene and spotted a body that was lying beneath a mattress and a blanket in the bathroom of the ground floor residence. When both the things were removed, it was found that there were two bodies–a man and a woman,’ an official investigating the matter said.
Deepak Dhingra, 32, a purchase executive in a private firm in Gurgaon, who is the landlord of the one room-set where the bodies were found, identified the woman as Pavitra, 39. The man is yet to be identified.
Dhingra told police that Pavitra used to reside along with her husband Ram Bahadur Thappa, who has a road-side food joint of Chinese food in the area. Pavitra used to assist him, and that is why most of the time the house remained closed.
‘On 13 February, the couple came to Indira Devi, Dhingra’s mother and paid the rent. They also informed her that they were going to their native village in Nepal as Thappa’s mother was unwell,’ said police.
Since 15 February, the doors of the house were locked so the landlord assumed that they left for Nepal. ‘After a few days, a foul smell started coming out of the room. On Tuesday evening, the neighbours decided to break open the door. That is when they found the bodies and informed police,’ said I N Saxena, a neighbour.
The locals said the landlord had rented the room to the couple without tenant verification. A senior official investigating the matter confirmed the allegations. ‘The couple had been residing in a rented accommodation for the last 12 years. Last year they shifted to this room without verification,’ the official said.
‘There is a possibility that Thappa is still alive and has fled to Nepal. According to the neighbours, Thappa was of average height but the male body recovered from the house was really tall,’ an investigating official said.
A senior official added, ‘We are investigating the case from all plausible angles and a team has been sent to conduct raids.’
Ajay Chaudhary, Additional Commissioner of Police (south-east) said, ‘A case under sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender) has been registered against the unknown person(s) at Govindpuri police station.’
The bodies have been sent to AIIMS for post-mortem after the house was inspected by the crime and forensic teams. The official said, ‘Before the autopsy reports come, it will be too early to come to any conclusion.’
