Truck mows down man fleeing custody

A 25-year-old Nepali citizen, being taken to hospital for a medical examination, was crushed under the wheels of a truck when trying to flee from police custody in the national capital, officials said on Sunday.

A police constable was taking him to hospital on his motorbike when the man attempted to escape.

Ravi, a resident of Nepal, was held from Rajouri Garden area in west Delhi on 20 September, after he failed to produce valid identification documents and reveal the purpose of his visit to Delhi, police said.

Constable Kuldeep took him to the Deen Dayal Upadhya Hospital in Hari Nagar Saturday for medical examination. 

As they approached the gate and the motorcycle slowed down, Ravi jumped off the bike and ran.

‘A truck hit him and he died on the spot,’ a police officer said.Truck driver Nafe Singh has been arrested, and the truck impounded.

Police said Ravi was a resident of Nepal. He was held by residents of the Rajouri Garden neighbourhood on the basis of suspicious activity at midnight, and was handed him over to the police. 

Residents complained he was targetting vehicles for theft.

Meanwhile, a departmental inquiry has been marked against constable Kuldeep and assistant sub-inspector Abhinandan who apprehended Ravi. They have been sent to district line for dereliction of duty.

Ravi’s relatives have been informed.
