In the pictures, the sweepers of New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) are seen spreading leaves on a road to be swept by Upadhyay later along with other guests.
The incident happened at India Islamic Centre on Wednesday where Upadhyay was invited as chief guest to participate in Swachha Bharat campaign organised by the Centre.
Reacting on the situation, former Delhi Congress president J P Aggarwal demanded resignation of BJP president. ‘If any party chief is caught in wrong doing, the party must demand resignation from him,’ said Aggarwal. Similarly, city Congress chief spokesperson Mukesh Sharma also said the BJP leaders of Delhi, instead of sincerely getting involved in the cleanliness campaign, have restricted themselves to spreading wastes and then enacting the drama of cleaning them for the purpose of creating photo opportunities. When Delhi BJP president was indulging in such an act, it could well be imagined how successful the cleanliness campaign has been.
Sharma said the cleanliness campaign in Delhi has been limited to put up photos in the social media. The city Congress also said that the two-member bench of the Delhi High Court had observed that the BJP-ruled MCDs, in the guise of the cleanliness drive, were in fact running a waste spreading campaign.
‘We were first to support the cleanness drive and also were the first to caution the party to bring it beyond tokenism. They neglected our warnings and are now being exposed. Cleanliness is a serious issue and it should be dealt with seriously,’ said Nagender Sharma, spokesperson of AAP.
However, Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay rejected the allegations and said: ‘The Swachha Bharat Mission is a commitment, not a photo opportunity.’
