At a time when the world is turning to the digital way, the Delhi Police too have opted for the same to nab the perpetual traffic violators plying in the city. For the first time, Delhi Traffic Police is likely to install cameras to detect the traffic violators and challan them.

There has been a rise in traffic violations such as speeding, driving without licence and smoking while driving, jumping red light etc. On an average, around 500 people are challaned per hour in the national Capital, still the department is unable to challan all the traffic violators due to staff crunch and other factors. Less amount of fine has been attributed to one of the reasons too for the increase in traffic violations.

So far, the Delhi Police have only installed CCTV cameras on the traffic signals or cantilever cameras to monitor the traffic movement in the national Capital. But to improvise their technology and to beat the staff crunch in the traffic department, the Delhi Police have ordered more than 400 cameras that are likely to be installed this year.

Apart from the CCTV cameras with unique features to detect violators, Delhi Police have also ordered 200 body worn cameras for the traffic cops deployed on the field. These cameras were ordered specifically to capture the rise in confrontations or interactions between traffic policemen and motorists stopped for violations.

“After a survey conducted by the Delhi Traffic Police, as many as 114 cameras will be installed at the traffic junctions that will detect over-speeding. Soon after a commuter will violate the speed limit, his registration number will be captured and he will be challaned,” said a senior official in traffic department.

Around 32 cameras will be installed at prime locations in the city to monitor the commuters jumping red light signal. As many as 200 digital cameras have also been ordered that will be given to the traffic cops on the field. Instead of challaning the violator on the spot, the cops will be clicking the photographs of the vehicles violating traffic norms specifically focusing on the registration number.

Further, a challan will be issued and sent to his residence. As a result, commuters will not have to face traffic snarls due to checking and prosecution by the traffic cops.

The official further added that 120 additional cameras including cantilever cameras have also been ordered to serve the purpose. Traffic police is likely to get around 32 cameras that will record videos and as many as 50 vehicular mounted cameras will be added in the equipment list.

Recently, the traffic police officers have installed a digital device on the windscreen of their cars that not only capture violations on streets but will also record the area and timing of the offence.
