A leading telecom company recently tied up with Galerie Art Eterne to mobilise the art world and unleash their vision of the tiger on the canvas. The art project ‘Strokes for Stripes’ featured various artists who showcased their imagination of the tiger, the national animal and pride which is sadly on the verge of extinction.
The works of the artists culminated in the form of a calendar for 2013. These soul stirring art pieces were subsequently auctioned to raise funds to highlight the need of tiger conservation and create awareness for the cause.
Vivek Menon, executive director, Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) said: ‘Wildlife conservation would not be possible without support and funding from charitable organisations, institutions and individuals. CSR focus on wildlife has also been on a rise in the country, which is a positive trend.’
Eminent artists whose works were showcased included Arpana Caur, Jai Zharotia, Niladri Paul, Prof. Niren Sengupta, Sanjay Bhattarcharya, Ajay Zharotia, Krishnendu Porel, Pratul Dash, P. Shivani Bhardawaj, Amarendra Maharana, Prittam Priyalochan, Sandeep Jigdung and Vinita Dasgupta.
‘I am proud to be a part of this cause. Doing my bit for this social cause gives me an inner satisfaction, that is all I wanted to do,’ said P. Shivani Bhardawaj, whose portrait was sold for Rs 2 Lakh at the auction.
The portraits which were originally priced at Rs 1 lakh each were sold for Rs 3-4 lakhs at the auction. The proceeds from the auction were donated to WTI, the initiative’s cause partner who will channelise these funds for ‘Save Our Tigers’ initiative.
The event witnessed performances by Louis Banks, a Grammy Award nominated music composer and adman-lyricist Prasoon Joshi who wrote a few lines especially for the occasion. Diverse groups such as artists, environmentalists, conservationists were present at the event, to lend their support to the cause.
