Balram Tanwar, MLA (Chattarpur) since 2008
Indian National Congress MLA Balram Tanwar from Chhattarpur constituency entered politics in 1982 from NSUI. Tanwar was first elected as a member of legislative assembly in 2003 and was re-elected in the fourth legislative assembly in 2008. Tanwar was also president of Block Congress in 1985.At present he is vice-chairman of Gramin Vikas Board and Delhi Jal Board member. In an interview with Dipanshu Roy, Tanwar shared his journey into the political world. Excerpts:
How did it all begin?
I was into social work and that led to politics. I wanted to be a public servant. I was also highly inspired by our chief minister Sheila Dikshit. Therefore I began my journe with the Congress party.
Tell us something about your constituency?
Well, my constituency comprises three assembly, including unauthorised colonies, JJ clusters and villages. From bureaucrats to rural dwellers live in my constituency, so I have to deal with all kinds of problems.
What are the major achievements and what are your upcoming projects?
When I took over, transport, electricity, water and roads were in real bad shape. However, because of metro connectivity, the transport problem has been solved. Roads were relaid and water problem was also looked into. Many schools were also upgraded for better education. On 7 October, underground reservoir would be inaugurated by chief minister and a 200-bed hospital is also being planned.
Unauthorised colonies and regularisation of farm houses are major concerns in your constituency. Your take?
We have tried to develop around 35 unregularised colonies in my constituency investing in electricity, roads, community centre and sewerage lines. Our government is trying hard to regularise these colonies as early as possible and we are hopeful that before assembly elections the work of regularisation would be completed. Farm houses are not in my control or the Delhi government. Delhi Development Authority should decide about them.
What are your plans for the assembly elections slated for next year?
Definitely we will win in 2013 assembly elections as our opposition is very weak. Delhi is like mini India and dwellers want development and our government has done exactly that in the last 15 years or so.
What do you think are the reasons behind MCD election defeat for Congress?
The main reason was allocating tickets to undeserving people. That led to our defeat in Delhi.
