The incident took place at around 9.10 am when the child was playing outside his residence in Jai Vihar Phase-I area in Najafgarh. To keep a tab on Chinmay’s activity, his father was standing barely 100 metre away from him.

According to the police, while Chinmay was playing, a speeding Tata 407 came and hit him. After he fell on the road, the driver mowed him down and tried to flee. Immediately, the locals nabbed him whereas, Chinmay was rushed to the nearby hospital where he was declared dead.

The angry mob thrashed the driver, who was later identified as Dabbu Shah, a resident of Bihar. They also damaged the vehicle. In the meantime, at around 9.20 am a call was made to the Police Control Room and two teams were sent — one at the spot and the other to the hospital. The team that reached the spot found that the mob was beating Shah and he was in a pool of blood.
