The garment factory of the accused was incurring huge losses for the past few years and was on the verge of closing down. Hence, the accused, identified as Sameer Verma (30), hatched a plan to extort Rs 2 crore from one of his business associates by threatening him that he knew the whereabouts of his wife and children’, said Alok Kumar, additional commissioner of police (Central).
The other two accused —Hemant (26) and Ajit Gupta (19), worked as supervisor in Sameer’s garment unit.
According to police, the victim Vinod Jain also deals in garments. On October 25, he received the first extortion call. The caller said he was an associate of Dawood Ibrahim and threatened to harm his family if he did not pay Rs 2 crore. Jain immediately reported the matter to police.
Few days after the first extortion call, the accused sent a parcel to Vinod. ‘The big gift-wrapped package had nothing more than a threat letter. The CCTV footage of Jain’s residence revealed that the parcel was delivered by Ajit’, the ACP said.
He further said the main accused Sameer was arrested from his factory at east Delhi’s Shakarpur on Wednesday night. Four mobile phones and four SIM cards were also recovered from his possession, which were used for making the extortion calls.
Durin sustained interrogation, Sameer told police about his accomplices. He also said he was a close associate of the victim for the past two years and knew about his business. Further investigations are underway, the police officer said.
