A Delhi court convicted three youths Vinod, Ravi and Rahul for kidnapping, gang raping and murdering a 19-year-old girl and fixed 17 February as the date for pronouncing sentence in the case. The victim’s family had sought death penalty for the criminals.
Additional sessions judge Virender Bhat said, ‘You have been convicted under Section 363 (kidnapping), 376 (2) (g) (gang rape) and 302 (murder) of the IPC,’ for raping and killing the girl whose mutilated and decomposed body was recovered from a Haryana village in 2012.
According to the prosecution, the three men, all in their 20s, on 9 February 2012 dragged the victim into their car near her house in Qutub Vihar in New Delhi and sped away. Prosecutor Satwinder Kaur told the court they drover her away to Harayana and for the next three days, they raped her in a mustard field. ‘Through these three days, they constantly beat her up, burnt her with cigarette butts, mutilated her eyes and face with screwdrivers, inserted a broken liquor bottle in her private parts, poured acid over her eyes and her face and finally left her to die,’ said Kaur.
Speaking to Millennium Post, victim’s father Ashok Kumar (name changed) said that he comes to Jantar Mantar every day to light lamps in memory of his daughter. ‘I do not know how long her suffering will last in my mind, but anything less than death sentence would not satisfy me.’
Anita Gupta, a social worker who helped the family in fighting the legal battle said that the 19-year-old was not Nirbhaya but the horror she went through was just as bad, or maybe even worse.
