This Delhi institution spared the rod, but asked the students to roll on floor
In an extreme case of corporal punishment, over 35 young girls and boys of an eminent institute in Delhi were asked to make a circle by holding both their legs with hands and roll like balls on the track for arriving late for a conference on Saturday. Even girls were not spared.
‘We were asked to roll down the running track for over 200m by holding our legs with the hands for coming late to the conference, right in front of the guests, staff and our batchmates,’ said a student of B Sc Physical Science of Indira Gandhi Institute of Physical Education and Sports Science in New Delhi. According to sources over one third of the group were girls and were also punished in the same manner.
‘We requested the professor to punish us either separately or differently, but he insisted on the same punishment for us too ... We had no option but to follow,’ said a girl from the institute.
After they rolled down the track, the students were allowed to attend the conference. The students had later complained to the principal. ‘We did not want to create a bad image for the college before the dignitaries. But complained to the principal the same day,’ said another girl student of the college.
When contacted, the principal of the institute, D K Singhla, confirmed the incident and said, ‘On the complaints of the students, the associate professor has been removed from the conference organising committee and also from the conference assembly.’
‘A inquiry has been ordered against him and showcause notice has also been issued,’ said Singhla. ‘The college has demanded an explanation from the professor, and reports of this incident will also be given to the governing body of college,’ added Singhla.
