The move comes after Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Singh Chavan were hooted earlier in the week by crowds cheering prime minister Narendra Modi.
Chavan on Thursday, as announced earlier, decided to stay away from another official function in the state inviting criticism from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokespersons who called it breach of protocol.
The ruling party also told Congress chief ministers not to fall prey to the ‘complex arising due to the popularity’ of Narendra Modi among the masses and added that the Congress may decide to ignore Modi’s dais but they cannot ignore his mantra of good governance and development.
The Congress, on the other hand, claimed there was an ‘orchestrated’ and ‘well-planned’ conspiracy behind the heckling of opposition chief ministers as it justified Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan’s decision not to attend events with the prime minister in Nagpur.
Targeting the prime minister over the issue, AICC general secretary Ambika Soni said no one has the right to ‘humiliate’ duly elected chief ministers by ‘inciting’ supporters and said that Modi should immediately ask his partymen to desist from such acts.
The reactions from the Congress came on a day when Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren of JMM was heckled by the crowds in the presence of Modi at a function in Ranchi following similar scenes faced in recent days by the Congress chief ministers of Maharashtra and Haryana.
On Thursday, after Maharashtra and Haryana chief ministers, it was the turn of the Jharkhand chief minister to be hooted by crowds in the presence of Modi at a function held at Ranchi.
The audience that included BJP activists chanted ‘Modi, Modi’ as soon as Soren, who runs a coalition with the Congress and the RJD, took the microphone. Soren, however, continued with his speech as Modi waved at the people for restraint. The shouts carried on all through
Soren’s speech. Meanwhile, in Nagpur, Modi called for more emphasis on clean energy in the power sector while launching NTPC’s 1,000-mw super thermal power station at Mouda. ‘Our mission would be to provide 24x7 electricity to all Indians,’ he said.
