Taking a dig at radicalization of terrorist Burhan Wani, Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday said that terrorists using social media as a tool for spreading their propaganda was a threat.
Burhan Wani was a militant and he was more dangerous on the internet than on the streets. Massive protests have swept the Kashmir Valley since the killing of Wani, in which 47 people have died and more than 2,500 have been wounded. As Pakistan declared him a martyr and senior leaders of the ruling People’s Democratic Party demanded an investigation into his killing, Chief Minister Mufti contradicted the details of how he had died.
During a conference, organised by Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) in coordination with National Investigation Agency (NIA), Singh said that the Government is committed to punishing terrorists. “The Government is working to strengthen the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) Act,” he said while addressing the inaugural ceremony of two-days conference of intelligence agencies in Delhi.
The Home Minister especially talked about the challenges during the investigation process that the agencies are facing. He said, “The conference is an opportunity to discuss the challenges during investigation of traditional and modern crimes.”
Asserting optimism Singh said “The ways to improve the quality of investigation especially for economic and organized crimes and related legal issues will be discussed in this conference.” “The crime is an act which is committed by persons with perverted mind or in adverse circumstances.
However, crime cannot be accepted as legitimate by any civilized society,” he affirmed. Eexpressing his concern over women safety he said, “The government is concerned about the crime against women and safety of women. To investigate crime against women, dedicated Investigative Units on Crime against Women (IUCAW) are being established in 564 district of India.”
“Central Government will spend Rs 324 crore in next two years on this unit,” he added.
Singh also racked up the issue of recent atrocities on Dalit communities. He said,“ Our Government is also committed to the empowerment and development of Dalit brothers. We have to create an atmosphere where they can approach police without hesitation when they are victimized.”
Recently, the issue rocked Upper and Lower house of the Parliament and the oppositions seemed to be oppositing the BJP-led NDA government’s stand. However, the Home Minister claimed that as per the National Records Bureau, the conviction rate of the crimes is very low, that is why Quality of Investigation is crucial in ensuring justice for the victims and punishment for the offender.
