With the city recording first swine flu fatality of the season, doctors advise to avoid coming in contact with the person suffering from flu and always using handkerchief while coughing.
Swine flu is an infection caused by a virus. The most common subtype, or strain of virus, is influenza type A H1N1, and this subtype causes infection in people.
“Swine flu is contagious, and it spreads in the same way as seasonal flu. When people who have it cough or sneeze, they spray tiny drops of the virus into the air. If one comes in contact with these drops or touch a surface (such as a doorknob or sink) that an infected person has recently touched, there are chances of getting infected by the flu,” said S P Byotra, senior physician and chairman, Department of Medicine at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.
Symptoms of swine flu include cough, cold, cough, sore throat, fever, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.
“Besides fever and chills, person may be also suffering from pneumonia (an infection of the lungs). Due to this the oxygen level decreases and further affects functioning of brain, lungs and liver. It can also lead to organ failure,” said S P Byotra.
Health experts say, if cold and fever don’t subside within four-five days, doctor should be consulted and person should get flu test.
“Flu can attack anybody. But adults and children who have suppressed immune system are more prone to flu. People should avoid contact with person infected with flu. Restrain from handshakes. People should wash their hands often with soap and water, especially after they cough or sneeze. Also, avoiding touching your eyes, nose or mouth as germs spread this way,” said another doctor.
