Hassan Rouhani, the Iranian president, has come under fire from hardline politicians and media in Tehran for hailing his ‘historic’ meeting with David Cameron after the prime minister later made heavily critical comments about Iran. Cameron has also been condemned in Iran for his remarks at the United Nations general assembly about the Islamic republic, which he rebuked for its ‘support of terrorist organisations’, its nuclear programme and its ‘treatment of its people’.

Rouhani and Cameron had earlier met at the British mission to the United Nations for the first talks between the leaders of the two countries since the 1979 Iranian revolution. The Iranian leader spoke enthusiastically of a ‘new outlook’ after the ‘constructive’ talks. while pro-Rouhani newspapers from the country’s more moderate wing prominently featured photographs of the two men during their meeting.
