The Delhi government has directed the Deputy commissioners of all 11 districts to ensure surprise checks and regular inspections by Sub-divsional Magistrates(SDMs) to crack down on burning of garbage, plastic and leaves in open areas.
Delhi Environment minister Asim Ahmed Khan informed Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia about this decision in a meeting to review the measures taken so far, to check the growing air pollution in the Capital.
The environment department has issued a series of directions to the Deputy Commissioners, top officials of the three Municipal Corporations of Delhi, New Delhi Municipal Council, PWD, CPWD, DDA, Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and Delhi Parks and Garden Society.
“Inspections teams constituted by the DPCC have so far inspected 207 locations across the national Capital and inputs about sensitive locations have already been forwarded to the respective corporations and Delhi Police to detect and prevent the burning of garbage, leaves and plastic in open areas,” said DPCC officials.
The environment department is finalising upon a series of strict measures against defaulters, including imposition of hefty fines, said a Delhi government official.
Hike capacity of Burari C&D waste plant: NGT
NGT has directed Delhi government to take “immediate” steps to enhance the capacity of its Burari plant for reutilisation and recycling of construction and demolition waste material. A bench headed by NGT Chairperson noted there is “dire need” for preventing the pollution of air from dust keeping in mind public health. “Construction activity is one of the very significant facets of development, however, it is one of the serious contributors of air pollution by generating dust.”
