Sunanda case: Tharoor records his statement, Mehr Tarar cries foul

Update: 2014-01-20 00:29 GMT
During his over half-an-hour long deposition at SDM Alok Sharma's office in south west Delhi, Tharoor is understood to have narrated events prior to the death of his wife. Sources said he was asked about the events in the last few days before the tragedy. The minister left without speaking to the media after recording his statement.

The union minister wrote in his letter to Shinde, urging him to issue instructions for expediting a probe into the death of his wife as Tharoor said in the letter, he was 'horrified to read the reckless speculation rampant' in the media.

'I pledge full and unstinting cooperation. Nothing short of the truth will end the indignity to which my wife and I are being subject at a time when all I seek is to be allowed to grieve in private with her and my near and dear ones.' he added.

Doctors on Saturday said Pushkar died an 'unnatural, sudden death' with her body bearing 'injury marks'. Police, however, said 'it could be a case of drug overdose or overdose of sleeping pills' but added that things would be clear only after the detailed autopsy report was received. Sunanda Pushkar was found dead under mysterious circumstances at a five-star hotel in south Delhi on Friday evening. Investigation of the case is on to ascertain whether it was suicide, murder or natural death.

Meanwhile, peeved at being at the centre of controversy surrounding Shashi Tharoor and his late wife, Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar claimed she had no role in his marital discord with Sunanda Pushkar and was a ‘victim of conspiracy.’  Tarar, who has changed her profile picture on Twitter to a burning candle following Pushkar's death on Friday, said she met Tharoor twice, once in India in April and then in Dubai in June last year. ‘Everything has happened to me. A Pakistani woman sitting here cannot spoil their marriage,’ the 45-year-old Lahore-based journalist said.

Evidence of drug overdose in body

There was no trace of alcohol in the body of Sunanda Pushkar though some evidence of presence of anti-depressant drug was likely, AIIMS sources said on Sunday. Doctors at AIIMS, where a three-member board of doctors performed the post-mortem on Saturday, had said the death was ‘sudden and unnatural’. AIIMS sources Sunday said the doctors have not found any trace of alcohol in the body. But presence of Alprazolam, which belongs to a group of psychoactive drugs used as sedatives, could not be ruled out at present.
