With a view to control increasing number of dengue cases, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation [SDMC] has decided to issue guidelines to its schools, to ask students to dress in a way that most body parts are covered. ‘We will soon issue such directions to principals of SDMC schools. They will ask students to wear full -sleeved clothes, and also give some relaxation in dress code, till the dengue season is over in the city,’ said Manish Gupta, Commissioner of SDMC, in the House meeting on Wednesday.
The councillors had demanded such preventive guidelines in the MCD schools. The councillors cutting across the party lines also demanded deployment of more field workers to check mosquito breeding and necessary arrangments in hospitals to provide better treatment to patients.
In a letter, Gupta urged Heads of Departments in government and educational institutes to follow preventive measures against dengue in their offices and institutions.
He also asked the administrative heads to appoint nodal officers to ensure preventive measures. The name, address and phone numbers of appointed nodal officers should be communicated to the municipal health officer of SDMC.
Gupta said if the agencies fail to take specified preventive measures against dengue, they are liable for punishable with a fine of Rs 500 under Delhi Municipal Corporation [Malaria & Other Vector Borne Diseases] Bye laws, 1975. ‘The Temephos granules, used against the mosquitoes, were not distributed this year in June and July, which work for 21 days in coolers. Steps were taken only after the disease had spread far and wide,’ said Farhad Suri, Leader of Opposition, SDMC.
Meanwhile, 35 new suspect cases of dengue were reported on Wednesday, of which 15 were from SDMC and 9 each from EDMC and NDMC. So far, 298 cases have been reported in Delhi, which is only 30 cases less than 2011. Of the total 298 dengue cases, 118 were from NDMC, 113 from SDMC and 52 from EDMC.
Meanwhile, 35 fresh cases of dengue, the highest for a single day this season, were reported in the capital on Wednesday, taking the total number of those hit by the virus to 298. Of the 35 new cases, two cases were reported from NDMC areas in the capital while the others were reported from South, North and East Delhi municipality areas.
Except Narela and Sadar Paharganj, all the other zones in the city reported fresh cases today, according to figures from all three MCDs.
Of the 298 cases, four cases have been reported from outside Delhi. A nine-year-old girl died due to dengue last month. Last year, the capital saw 216 cases of dengue, including eight originating from outside, and three deaths. In 2010, there were 4,108 cases, including 24 from outside, and five deaths while figures for 2009 were 29 cases but no deaths.
