Robbery has been ruled out as a motive since the house was not ransacked. Sour relationships or personal conflicts have not been ruled out by the police. The incident came to light at 5.30 am when the cousin of Santosh Kumar, the deceased, came to their room on the fourth floor after sleeping on the terrace. He saw that the door was broken and after he entered, he came upon Kumar’s body, which was lying in a pool of blood, beheaded.
After Sonu — the cousin — screamed, another cousin, Mahender, who was sleeping on the terrace came downstairs and their neighbours rushed to the spot after hearing the commotion. Meanwhile, a call was made to the police control room and a team reached the spot.
On June 14, Kumar returned from his home town in UP and was supposed to get married within the next two months. On late Thursday, after having dinner, Kumar stayed back in his room while his two cousins went to their terrace to sleep.
According to the police, around two to three men have committed the crime and were aware about Kumar sleeping alone at night. They gagged him by putting clothes into his mouth and a sharp weapon was used to behead him. His body also had a few injuries.
Santosh Kumar was a street vendor at the Sarojini Nagar market. The exact motive behind the murder could not be ascertained as of Friday evening. A case under the section of murder has been registered against the unknown people for perpetration and more than a dozen people, including the two cousins have been questioned.
