States to be ranked on ease of doing business: Sitharaman

Update: 2015-09-04 23:56 GMT
The government is going to release state-wise ranking based on ‘ease of doing business’ across India. Speaking to Millennium Post on Thursday, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Commerce and Industry Nirmala Sitharaman said, “The ranking is being done by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP). It is not out yet, but we will release it soon. This is the effort which went into the ‘Make in India’ initiative, after which we are looking at state governments trying to rank them, depending on how easy and hassle-free it will be for an investor to set up their
business there.”

DIPP is expected to release the information soon which will rank the states depending on ‘ease of doing business’. Reportedly, the World Bank is helping the DIPP in releasing this report. The primary focus of this ranking system is to introduce a sense of competition among states to procure the best business deals, depending on their ranking.

Sitharaman said, “After ‘Make in India’ it was launched by PM Narendra Modi. We then followed it up with <g data-gr-id="31">one-day</g> workshop with state governments, during which an action plan was drafted. The focus of this action plan is based on 98 parameters which have to be completed by the states that can be done to remove hurdles to facilitate investment. We wanted states to fulfil all those 98 actionable points which had <g data-gr-id="27">different</g> deadline. Till June, all of them had to be fulfilled.”

“States have been very positive and cooperative during the entire exercise. We have been working out a ranking system which is based on the completion of all 98 actionable points. After this, it will be assessed which of the states are going to appear far more attractive for investment, and based on that their ranking should be done,” she added. DIPP had circulated a set of 285 questions and in reply, the state governments have submitted reasonable answers regarding the same issue.
