French Open: Venus enters 3rd round, Kvitova out

Update: 2017-05-31 18:10 GMT
Venus Williams eased into the third round of the French Open with a straight sets win over Japanese Kurumi Nara here on Wednesday.

Williams, who is seeded 10th, won 6-3, 6-1 in an hour and 20 minutes, reports Efe.

The 36-year-old American, who has seven Grand Slam titles, is set to face the winner of the match between Belgian Elise Mertens and Dutch Richel Hogenkamp.

Meanwhile, Petra Kvitova showed yet more heart and spirit but her remarkable comeback was ended by an inspired, battling performance from qualifier Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

Petra Kvitova called it the end of a fairytale but, even in the wake of an honourable defeat to American qualifier Bethanie Mattek-Sands, it was one with a happy ending as the woman whose story has dominated Roland-Garros this year promised her adventure had ensured it would be back to "business as normal" from now on.

The first act of her extraordinary comeback had been bathed in tears and high emotion but reality bit when Kvitova knuckled down to the second dramatic scene here on Wednesday, with her courageous adventure ended on No.1 Court by a pugnacious opponent.

The Czech once again demonstrated plenty of heart and glimpses of her old champion self but after the gentle welcome back offered by her first-round opponent Julia Boserup, the 32-year-old Mattek-Sands was a quite different proposition, a streetwise battler designed to remind Kvitova just what a long, hard road she has embarked upon again.

The world No.116, hardened by three qualifying matches last week, was teak tough in two breakers, prevailing 7-6(5), 7-6(5) and capitalising on a few moments of frailty on Court No.1 after two hours and six minutes of compelling battle in the morning sunshine.
