A Pratapgarh like incident in which Deputy Superintendent of Police Zia-Ul-Haq was killed was averted when irate mob attacked the policemen and held them captive in Gauribazar area of Deoria district after a Kshetra Panchayat member Arun Singh was shot dead by criminals at Mathiya roundabout. The mob torched several houses and shops and held captive Superintendent of Police Umesh Srivastava along with other cops for more than 3 hours who went there to control the situation. Firing was reported during the clash between the supporters and rivals of the deceased Kshetra panchayat member.
