Delhi health minister A K Walia on Tuesday  claimed that the city government has decided to commission a 800-bedded, full-fledged dedicated cancer institute as Delhi State Cancer Institute – South (DSCI) with comprehensive and ultra-modern facilities.

This was decided in a meeting chaired by the Walia. The meeting was attended by the principal secretary (health), special secretary (health), director (health services) and director of DSCI and other officers concerned.

Walia asked the officers concerned to act in tandem to develop Chhatarpur as a modern health care hub. Apart from DSCI, a 200-bedded general hospital which will be linked internally with the main DSCI and a para-medical training institute with intake of 500 students under various para-medical disciplines every year are in the offing. Walia stated that there was a need to establish a comprehensive cancer care institute in south Delhi to provide world-class treatment facilities to the residents of south Delhi.

The government has decided to make use of 14-acre land in Chhatarpur for this purpose. The officers concerned have been directed to expedite work.

It was also decided that in order to provide cancer care facilities in south Delhi, a separate branch of the DSCI would start functioning by September this year as an OPD and day-care centre.  It may be recalled that another OPD and day-care centre in west Delhi is being commissioned on the 13 March, 2013 in Janakpuri Super-specialty Hospital complex.
