One of the five accused involved in the Defence Colony heist is reported to have participated in the crime to meet the expenses of medical treatment of his wife. According to the Gurgaon Police sources, Vijay, one of the alleged robbers, had helped the other four so that he could arrange money for her wife's operation.
Sources told Millennium Post that Paras Hospital in Gurgaon demanded Rs 12,000 as deposit for a surgery of Vijay's wife. Soon after the robbery, Vijay fled to the Chakkarpur area in Gurgaon where his in-laws lived in a rented accommodation. Vijay hid the bag containing Rs 1 crore in their house. On Saturday evening, he admitted his wife to Paras Hospital, a reputed medical centre in Gurgaon and deposited Rs 12,000 as advance.
Following the robbery, the Delhi Police had shared serial numbers of the looted currency notes with all the big commercial centres across the National Capital Region and the police forces of neighbouring districts of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. The hospital administration detected that the currency notes deposited by Vijay matched the serial numbers provided by the Delhi Police. They immediately informed the Gurgaon Police, which in turn alerted its Delhi counterpart.
Following the trail, the Delhi Police officials reached the rented accommodation of Vijay's in-laws in Chakkarpur but found the doors locked. With the help of the landlord, they opened the house and recovered a black-and-blue cash bag carrying Rs 85 lakh.
Vijay's father-in-law, who runs a grocery shop, was later picked from his shop and questioned by the police, who revealed that Vijay had dropped the bag in one of the rooms about which he claimed to be unaware. 'Vijay took my daughter to the hospital for her operation. Vijay has been missing since then,' he told the police.
