Sorry for the interruption: TV screens at North, South DMC civic centres go blank
Senior officers of North and South Delhi Municipal Corporations and their visitors have lost their only mode of entrainment at the civic centres as the television sets have gone blank for at least one month.
According to sources, the problem cropped up as the contract with the service provider MTNL expired on 31 August.
These television sets installed in the huge cabins of mayors, deputy mayors, leaders of houses, leaders of opposition, and standing committee chairmen of both North and South Delhi Municipal Corporations were the only medium of entertainment for the councillors and their visitors from their constituencies.
‘I used to ask our visitors to be in our cabins and watch television whenever I was busy. It was also the only medium for us to get updated about news,’ said a senior leader who has a huge cabin fitted with Liquid Crystal Display (LCD). Some of the leaders and important office bearers have two LCD television sets — one in their hall and another in their private rooms.
The officers are also equally pained due to the television screens going blank. ‘I generally play the television on mute or very low volume to see news updates which makes us aware about external world. But now sitting in my office, I have no idea about the external world,’ said an officer of additional commissioner level on condition of anonymity.
The civic centre houses the offices of both North DMC and South DMC. Apart from commissioners, additional commissioners, deputy commissioners, heads of departments, have LCD TV sets fitted in their cabins.
‘Our contract with the service provider MTNL expired on 31 August so the services have been discontinued. However, we have started the process to engage another service provider but it will take at least one month,’ said YS Mann, director, Press and Information in North DMC.
