Six family members charred to death as cylinder catches fire

Sadly, the people in the house were engrossed in preparations to welcome the new bride when the incident took place.

In the early hours of Friday, the groom along with other male family members and relatives were on their way to Bijnor in west UP, where the wedding was to be held. At around 11 am, Mohd Idrees, father of the groom received a call by one of the neighbour who informed him about the tragic incident. Upon hearing the news, they all immediately returned to Delhi.

During the incident, the female members and other relatives were gathered at the first floor for som wedding ritual. ‘One of the woman was cooking on a stove kept at the entrance of one of the two rooms. As the woman tried to adjust the stove pipe, it got disconnected. As a result, within seconds, major fire broke out in the house and twenty five persons were trapped inside,’ Gulnaz (19), narrated the incident in a choked voice. She stays right infront of the house where the incident took place.

Speaking to Millennium Post, Mohd Naseeb who resides at the third floor of the five storey building said, ‘I rescued around 16 persons including few children. But the flames engulfed and I came downstairs.’

A police official informed that the fire tender reached the spot on time otherwise it could have been ‘worse’. ‘A fire tender was on it way to douse off a firing truck in nearby area. But by the time it reached the spot, fire in the truck was controlled by locals. Hence the fire tender was diverted to Jasola’, said the officer.

According to police, five persons were charred to death, who were later identified as Mohseena (30), groom’s mother, Bhoori Katoon (55) his grand mother, Mohseena (30), his aunt, Irma (4) his cousin and Sarah (3) one of his relative’s daughter.

Islam, the groom owns a pan shop in the colony where his father also works. His younger brother, Salman and sister Salma were unemployed. A month ago, they have shifted to the house after the renovation work was completed.

‘Their bodies have been sent for the post-mortem examination and investigation is on to know the exact cause of cylinder blast,’ a police official close to investigation said.
