Singh for blood bank facility along highways

Citing rise in the number of road accidents, Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Friday emphasised on setting up blood banks along all major highways. “With the number of road accidents constantly on the rise, this (blood banks) will supplement timely help to the needy at places where the government infrastructure is still inadequate,” Singh said.

“In the next phase, the facility can also be replicated in the interior belts of rural and semi-urban 
areas,” he added. 

Singh emphasised on the need to set up blood bank facility along all major highways across the country. He has offered to collaborate with ISBT and related agencies to initiate this process from his own Lok Sabha constituency, Udhampur, in J&K.

A team of experts will soon be visiting the districts of Kathua, Udhampur and Reasi to work out on the early implementation of this plan, he said. From the experience gained from this area, the campaign for upgraded empowerment of blood bank facility will also be extended to other states in different parts of the country, including the North-east, said Singh.

Dwelling on the academic aspects, the Minister said in the emerging scenario, the indications and requirements of blood transfusion have also undergone a change. 

For example, he said, while about three decades ago, blood transfusion was mostly required in people suffering from anaemia or protein deficiency, in the present day, victims of road accidents and patients of chronic kidney failure, among others. mostly need <g data-gr-id="24">blood</g> transfusion.
