The 40-minute talks between Banerjee and Loong veered around the West Bengal Government’s lucrative incentives to potential investors from Singapore — a 10,000-acre land bank, a single-window clearance system and active assistance from the state government.
’I have invited prime minister Lee Hsien Loong to Kolkata for the inauguration of Bengal Aerotropolis in November and the planned business centre. I hope these milestones will further cement our dynamic trade relations,’ said the chief minister. The airport city is being set up at Andal near Kolkata in collaboration with Singapore’s Changi Group.
The Banerjee-Loong meeting was punctuated with goodwill gestures too. The CM gifted him a bag from the Uttar Dinajpur cottage industry, Darjeeling tea, a katha-stitched sari and a dokra statuette of goddess Durga. ‘It was a good meeting — very positive and very constructive,’ said Banerjee who was accompanied by state finance, commerce & industries minister Amit Mitra, chief secretary Sanjay Mitra, additional chief secretary (Commerce & Industries) C M Bachhawat and West Bengal industrial development corporation MD Krishna Gupta.
The chief minister started the discussions on a highly positive note by announcing an education Chair (fellowship) in Public Administration at University of Calcutta in the name of the founding father of Singapore. Mitra, who is leading the West Bengal delegation to Singapore, said that the planned business centre would act as a single-window centre to facilitate trade, business, investment and technology transfer between Singapore and West Bengal.
‘Several world famous manufacturing companies are headquartered in Singapore and we are confident that the centre will play a significant role in developing mutual financial and business ties,’ said Mitra, beaming with confidence all the while.
