While incoming chief minister Arvind Kejriwal debates whether to take a lift in the sarkari gadi (government vehicle) or not, Dikshit would be back in the driver’s seat in less than 10 days time.
‘I have taken a test drive, signed papers and hope to have the vehicle with me in less than 10 days time,’ Dikshit told Millennium Post on Thursday. Her brand new Maruti Ertiga would be delivered to her soon and she would be driving it herself. ‘I am self-driven. I used to drive my vehicle around the city till I became part of the chief minister’s office and had to follow protocol,’ said the 75-year-old as she planned her shift from the sprawling chief minister’s official residence at 3 Motilal Nehru Place.
‘I am confident that I would be able to handle driving though the traffic in the city has increased manifold in the last 15 years. I enjoyed driving around the city in my good old Fiat and later had the ubiquitous Maruti 800. My children are worried but I have told them that I would not be speeding,’ she said with a smile.
Dikshit would also be shifting residence sooner than expected. ‘I am looking for an accommodation in central Delhi, it could be a two or three bedroom flat,’ she says indicating that she was not planning to move out of New Delhi, her constituency for the past 15 years. ‘Packing up is going to be cumbersome. I have a huge collection of artifacts, paintings and books and they all would have to be neatly packed and kept somewhere before I decide what to do with them,’ she says as party leaders and workers come in groups to call on her.
On how busy she has been after leaving office, she is quick to reply, ‘I have been kept very busy now that I have to plan for life after the end of my tenure in Delhi Secretariat. I have to first ensure that my savings are prudently invested to ensure a regular income to look after my needs. I have to find a house to shift, I have just finalised the vehicle. Life has to move on.’
On the rise of Aam Aadmi Party and claims that they have been making, ‘They can make claims for another two days. From Saturday they would be in seat and they would have to perform. For the sake of Delhi, I want them to deliver on their promises,’ says Dikshit as she goes on to meet another group of visitors.
