Sheena Bora case: Peter remanded in judicial custody

Update: 2015-12-01 18:20 GMT
A court here today remanded former media baron Peter Mukerjea in judicial custody till December 14 in the Sheena Bora murder case, ending his 11-day CBI custody after his arrest on November 19 during which he was subjected to sustained grilling and a polygraph test.

After the proceedings in the court, Peter was taken to the high-security Arthur Road Jail here, where other two accused in the case - Sanjeev Khanna and Shyamvar Rai are also lodged.

"The accused is remanded in judicial custody till December 14," Magistrate N B Shinde said, after the probe agency submitted that it did not want his further custody.

CBI counsel Kavita Patil told the court that the agency's investigation for now is over and Peter may be remanded in judicial custody.

However, taking a dig at the agency, Peter's lawyer Kushal Mor said in the court that they don't have any objection to extension of his CBI custody for the complete satisfaction of the agency.

Meanwhile, Peter's brother Gautam told reporters outside the court that, "Peter is innocent and truth will prevail" even as Mor said that he will soon move a bail application in the sessions court.

Yesterday, CBI had secured Peter's custody by one more day (till today) on the ground that it needs to ascertain if he had given any 'deceptive reply' during the polygraph test conducted on him on Saturday and Sunday.

The probe agency had also told the court that it is expecting information from Interpol on the details of an account opened by Indrani Mukerjea, prime accused in murder case, in a bank in Hong Kong.

Peter, 59, husband of Indrani, was arrested on November 19 for his alleged role in the murder case and had been in CBI custody since then.

He was on Friday taken to Delhi by CBI for conducting a polygraph test on him and brought back to Mumbai yesterday.

Sheena (24), Indrani's daughter from an earlier relationship, was allegedly strangled in a car and then her body burnt and dumped in a forest in Raigad, about 84 kms from Mumbai.

Indrani (43), her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and her ex-driver Shyamvar Rai have been chargesheeted in the case. Indrani is lodged in Byculla prison.

CBI, while maintaining that financial transaction was the motive behind the murder of Sheena, had earlier said that Peter, during his interrogation, disclosed investments of crores of rupees made by him and Indrani.

Meanwhile, CBI sources said that the Interpol information of the Hong Kong and Singapore bank accounts opened by Indrani has not yet been received. The sleuths also said that they are awaiting the report of polygraph test conducted on Peter.
