70 employees of a well-known five star hotel Shangri-La Eros fell sick after their lunch at the staff canteen that was served at around 2 pm on Wednesday. They were taken to a nearby hospital, Dr Ram Manohar Lohia, at Connaught Place, at around 5.30 pm when they complained of uneasiness, vomiting and nausea. The affected employees included supervisors, chefs, security guards as well as executives of the hotel and they were served rajma-chawal and chicken at Shangri-la's canteen.
'It is a suspected case of acute food poisoning. Till now situation is under control. If anybody feels sick again for the next three days, we will immediately start their treatment with various tests,' said Dr T S Sidhu, medical superintendent of the hospital.
Dr Sunil Saxena, the CMO of the hospital, said, 'Mostly these things happen because of reheating stale food in this heat. We have prescribed anti-emetic for now and most of them have been discharged. Only a few are still under observation.'
According to the doctors, heat and humidity, along with improper usage of food, provide a conducive environment for micro-organisms to flourish.
A senior police officer said, 'We received a PCR call around 6 pm and immediately we sent our teams to Shangri-la Eros and to RML hospital. It appears to be a case of food poisoning. We are looking into the matter.'
According to G C Dwivedi, additional commissioner (New Delhi), a case under Section 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of Indian Penal Code has been registered and investigations are on.
'The hotel's in-house doctor immediately attended to them soon after they complained of uneasiness and, subsequently, some were sent to RML hospital for further medical assistance. The hotel is extending its fullest cooperation with the health authorities to determine the cause of their symptoms and will conduct an internal investigation, the management team is closely monitoring the health status,' said Advaita Kala, communications director of Shangri-La’s Eros.
