Informed sources in the Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday claimed that Amit Shah’s name as a next party chief will be announced on Wednesday. Earlier, names of three party leaders including Shah, JP Nadda and Om Mathur were doing rounds for the next party chief. However, BJP’s Parliamentary Board members finally put stamp on Shah’s name, which will be officially announced on Wednesday by Singh at the party headquarters at Ashok Road.
While Shah was the former state home minister in Gujarat and the man behind a clean sweep, Nadda is the BJP general secretary and Mathur is a party leader from Rajasthan.
Earlier, there were rumors that Nadda will be given the responsibility but now it is confirmed that Shah will hold the post. The reason being attributed to Shah’s appointment is that Modi wants Shah to remain in Delhi and become his eye and ear while running the government. Many political leaders feel that he was not included in the cabinet list, considering series of ‘allegations’ against him, which might have sent a wrong message to the people.
Nadda’s was emerging as a front-runner for the post of party president because of his close association with all the party leaders and especially the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. On the other hand, Shah is close to Modi and his effort in ensuring BJP’s victory in Uttar Pradesh. He was the party’s UP in-charge during the Lok Sabha poll.
Nadda, is Rajya Sabha MP from Himachal Pradesh. He started his political career as a student leader of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), allied to the BJP, in 1978. In the parliamentary election, Nadda played an important role in his home state Himachal Pradesh to win all the four seats even though the Congress government was at the helm.
In the previous BJP government (2007-2012) in the state, Nadda was forced to resign as forest minister in 2010 owing to differences between him and then chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal. He was then picked by Nitin Gadkari in his new team. Later he was made party’s national general secretary and also in-charge in Chhattisgarh.
