Shiv Sena workers on Wednesday staged a protest against the new exam pattern introduced by the Union Public Service Commission and warned, it would disrupt the Commission’s exams in the state if its demand to include Marathi in the syllabus was not met.
‘Our demand is that students should have the option of Marathi in the exam. If our demand is not met, we will disrupt UPSC exams in the state,’ Sena leader Gajanan Kirtikar said.
Sena workers carried placards, decrying the UPSC for its ‘anti-Marathi’ stance, while formulating the new pattern.
‘We will soon meet UPSC officials in Delhi to put forth our demand,’ Kirtikar said, while speaking at the protest, held at Hutatma Chowk here. The UPSC has notified the new pattern, which will spare candidates from compulsorily qualifying other language papers like Hindi or any of the VIII Schedule languages.
MANMOHAN REJECTS REGIONAL LANGUAGE TEST PROPOSAL
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has overruled the department of personnel officials to scrap the language paper and an optional paper in the civil service examinations to select a 1,000 government officers including the IAS, IPS and IFS.
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) had set the examination process in motion late on Wednesday evening after the government notified the rules for this year’s civil services preliminary examination.
The reforms would bring a semblance of a level playing field amongst lakhs of candidates appearing in different subjects.
Civil service aspirants earlier had to clear two language papers; English and a regional language.
The regional language paper has been completely withdrawn. About 6 to 11 per cent candidates – who passed the preliminary qualifying examination – flunked in the language papers in the second-tier examination.
The UPSC has doubled the number of general studies papers to four and halved the weightage for optional papers.
