One person has been arrested, on Tuesday, for allegedly killing the 42-year-old man, whose body was found in the lawn of Congress leader Kumari Selja’s bungalow at Motilal Nehru Marg in New Delhi on Monday morning.

Sanjay Chautala (42), husband of Selja’s domestic help, was allegedly beaten to death by Selja’s cook, Anil Yadav (28), in a tussle over suspicion of an illicit relationship between the accused and the victim’s wife, said police. The victim’s wife, Manju, was also detained by police for further interrogation and her role in the act has not yet been ruled out. ‘It has also emerged that the accused had made a phone call to Manju after the incident’, said a police official.

On Sunday night, Sanjay had returned home after leaving his wife and children at his in-laws’ residence at Laxmibai Nagar in south Delhi. ‘After coming back to his quarter, an argument broke out between him and Anil over an illicit relationship Anil allegedly had with his wife,’ informed Mukesh Kumar Meena, joint commissioner of police (New Delhi).

He further added that the argument led to a violent fight and Anil beat up Sanjay severely. ‘Sanjay soon ran towards the terrace where he was followed by Anil. It was there that the accused pushed the victim from the edge’, said Meena while adding that ‘the fall inflicted a severe injury on his head, and soon he succumbed to the blood loss.’

According to sources, both the victim and the accused were drunk, and Sanjay was provoked by the accused, who was already present in the quarters.

After the act, Anil cleaned up the crime scene to make it look like a accident and went back to his room. The victim hailed from Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh and worked as the supervisor of sweepers at the Selja’s Sena Bhawan premises. He lived with his wife and two children in the servants’ quarters.
